The Holland Hurricanes moved into a tie for first place in the IJHL standings Wednesday night after a 10-9 overtime victory at the Cody Banks Arena versus the Sherwood Falcons. The game was the third straight to enter overtime for the Hurricanes and the fourth game in a row where the score was settled by a single goal. The win improves their record to 2-1-2 while the Falcons drop to 2-2-1 on the season.

The Falcons took an early 2-0 lead in the first period after a goal from Matt McQuaid at 5:50 and a shorthanded goal from Harrison Nicholson at 12:36. The Hurricanes bounced back before the end of the period with goals from captain Blake Ozon at 16:43 and a short-handed goal from Alex Seyforth at 19:51 to tie the game at 2-2.

The Hurricanes took their first lead of the game at 8:45 of the second period when Curtis Martell scored on the power play, but just fifteen seconds later Josh Kirkpatrick scored to tie the game at 3-3. The scoring continued when Logan Welsh scored for the Hurricanes at 11:58 followed by goals from John Grimmer (15:41 and 19:22 shorthanded) and Pat Cummiskey (17:26 on the power play) to put the Hurricanes up 7-3. The Falcons Josh Scott replied with just two seconds remaining in the period to cut the Hurricanes lead to 7-4 through forty minutes of play. Goaltender Zack Gallison was removed from the Falcons net after the second period and Kody MacDonald took over.

With the Hurricanes holding a three-goal-lead with twenty minutes to go the Falcons struck fast and often. Josh Scott scored at 5:30, Craig Dougan found the net at 7:22 on the power play, and Scott added another at 7:57 to tie the game at 7-7.   At this point the Hurricanes Matt Derry was pulled in favor of Jonathan Boutin with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

With the game tied Hurricanes Patrick Cummiskey replied with his sixth of the season to give the Hurricanes the lead, but the Falcons refused to give up, with goals from Kyle Koughan at 13:49 and Craig Dougan at 16:20, the team from Sherwood regained the lead when they went ahead 9-8 with three minutes and forty seconds remaining.

With time ticking down the Hurricanes Alex Seyforth scored his third of the season at 17:36 unassisted. The game was tied at 9-9 and we were headed to overtime. The Falcons outshot the Hurricanes 43-38 through regulation.

In overtime the Falcons posted five shots on goal while the 'Canes replied with three, at 4:09 of the period Mason Baker scored his first goal as a Hurricanes to play hero and give the Hurricanes the 10-9 overtime victory.
Holland College is in action again this Saturday night when the host the Kensington Moase Plumbing & Heating Vipers at 8:15 at the Simmons Sports Centre.  Both teams are currently tied for first place in the league standings.
